BSc. (Hons) Geology

B.Sc. Geology

Department currently offers only an undergraduate programme of B.Sc. Geology Model I. It is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The course aims an exposure to the fundamentals of pure geology and its allied sciences with fieldworks and lab works.

Specific objectives include

  • provide basic knowledge of different branches of Geology at graduate level.
  • understand the Earth and its various processes – both external and internal – that shape it.
  • know and study minerals and rocks primarily as components of the Earth and also as its resources
  • assess natural resources of the Earth’s namely water, minerals, rocks, ores, coal and oil as a prelude to extract these for benefit of mankind.
  • realize the threat of natural disasters and work out ways to mitigate its effects.
  • Recognize the Earth as an environmental realm and chalk out plans for conserving it.

Admission Procedure:

The student seeking admission for the B.Sc. Geology course should submit the Application form duly filled in the college office. The application form can be bought from the college office by paying a fee of Rs.500/-or can be downloaded from the website.

Duration of the Course:

The course shall extend over a period of three academic years consisting of six semesters.

Course:

The curriculum of the B.Sc. Geology programme is designed in such a way to equip students to be competent geo – professionals with a strong theoretical foundation as well as practical. Each semester has lab works and each year there will be fieldworks.

The first semester comprises of fundamental topics on B.Sc. Geology by understanding Physical geological concepts and related disciplines such as Mathematics, Chemistry and languages including English and optional Hindi or Malayalam.

The second semester have course on Geomorphology along with the complementary papers and languages.

The third semester and fourth semesters deal with mineralogical and crystallographic concepts in geology.

The fifth semester onwards students fully focus on the various branches of geology and practical sessions associated with it. This mainly includes Petrology and Environmental Geology.

And in the sixth semester also newer basic concepts are introduced to students. Through various courses such as Palaeontology, Economic Geology, Geotectonics and Precambrian Geology, structural Geology and Phanerozoic stratigraphy of India. This year student will do a field-based project and submit a project report based on a topic they have chosen. A study tour is also part of the course and students will visit various parts of India which are geologically significant and have to submit the tour report as well as there will be specimen display of collected samples.

Practical examinations will be conducting at the end of each academic year at the end of second, fourth and sixth semester respectively.
