World Environment Day 2021

QUIZ COMPETITION “PRUEBA 2021”

REPORT

World Environment Day is acknowledged annually on June 5th with a view to generate awareness on the importance of protecting the nature that nurtures us. The Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology in collaboration with IQAC inaugurated the in-house quiz club, Geo Quiz virtually on June 5th at 10 am in connection with the celebrations of World Environment Day. 

The inaugural ceremony was followed by the final round of the virtual inter department Quiz Competition, “Prueba 2021” with the purpose of observing the day. The competition was held in two rounds for the students from different departments. The preliminary round was held on 28th May 2021through Google Meet. A total number of 26 students participated in the competition. Total forty people become the part of the event. The student coordinators prepared the questions covering various subjects including History, Geography, Politics and Science. One of the student coordinators, Ms. Aparna V. Sabu took up the role of the quizmaster and she announced the rules of the competition. The contestants enthusiastically took part in the competition as well as proved their prowess in world knowledge. The best six who scored the maximum points were selected for the final round. 

The final round of the Quiz commenced on June 5th through the virtual platform Google Meet. Contestants who cleared the preliminary round partook in the finals. The finals consisted of four rounds. The rules were read out and the contestants were asked to turn on their videos and audios when their turn came up.  The first stage of the competition being the rapid fire round started at 10.30 am. In this round the spontaneity of the participants was tested. The contestants were asked five set of questions each. In the second round they were asked to guess a famous personality using the clues provided. The third round was the logo guess round where the contestants were asked to identify the brand the logo represented. The final round was the 'Scattergories' where they were asked to randomly select a number displayed on the screen that represented various fields from which questions will be given. The competition lasted for 3 hrs.  The participants exuberantly engaged in the session so as to showcase their expertise. The contestants who scored the maximum points were declared the winners. Aiswarya Raju from BCOM CA1 (Semester 2) and Anandhu Anilkumar from BBA (Semester 6) bagged the first and second prizes respectively.

VAYANADHINAM 2021

(National Reading Day 2021)

REPORT

              June 19 is celebrated as National Reading Day to honour the life and works of

P.N. Panicker, a teacher from Kerala. Vayanadhinam is observed by Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology on 19th June 2021with a Webinar on the topic ‘Vayanayude Reethisastram (Changing perspectives in reading). The programme is organized by the Department of Malayalam in association with IQAC, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology.

Ms. Parvathy Kaimal, Assistant Professor of Malayalam Department welcomed the gathering that was presided over by Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department of Geology. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. M. Indulekha, Assistant Professor, Department of Malayalam, NSS Hindu College, Changanassery. It was followed by book talk by the students. Mr. Binu Abraham, Assistant Professor, Department of Malayalam made an evaluation of the webinar. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Nirmal Joseph, student of English department. The anchoring of the webinar was done by Ms. Gopika Mohan, student of Geology department. The chief organisers of the webinar were Mrs. Parvathy Kaimal and Mr. Binu Abraham. The webinar was concluded at around 11.30 am.

The speaker introduced the facts about changing perspectives in reading from earlier days to the present digital times. Throughout the webinar she introduced many of the Malayalam writers, their significant works and brief description as well as the behaviour and taste of the novels, short stories and poems. The talk was an insight to the participants on the importance and benefits of reading habit. A total of 70 people participated in the webinar.

TEACHERS' DAY 2021: Hand made and digital poster designing competition

Teachers' Day in India is celebrated since 5th September 1962 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, a renowned scholar, recipient of Bharat Ratna, first Vice- President, and second President of independent India. Every year Teachers' Day was celebrated as a tribute to the contribution made by teachers to society. 

The day was celebrated by the Geology Department of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology by conducting Poster making competition (both handmade and digital) for B.Sc. Geology students on 5th September, in association with IQAC. Students were given time on or before 6th September 2021, 8.00 pm to send their entries to the department e-mail address. Five entries were received in both categories. The programme was co-ordinated by Ms. Sruthi P Chandran, Assistant Professor in Geology.

Ms. Gopika Mohan of semester III B.Sc. Geology won first place in Handmade poster making competition and Mr. Amal K. Anilkumar of III B.Sc. Geology bagged first prize in Digital poster designing competition. Prize were distributed to the winners along with e- Certificates. Participation e-Certificate is awarded to all participants. 

DIWALI CELEBRATION 2021

REPORT

Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology celebrated the festival of lights on 8th November 2021. The programme was organized by the Department of Geology in association with IQAC. The formal inauguration of the Diwali celebration was held at 11:00 am by the principal Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhi CMI by lighting the auspicious lamp. The teachers and students of the department were part of the ceremony. A rangoli of Indian Map was made filled with colours by the students of Geology on the basis of physiographic division. The guests were welcomed by Mr. Vishnu Jayakumar (semester 1 Geology). The Introductory Speech was delievered by Dr. Benno Joseph (Head of the Department of Geology). A candle lighting ceremony was performed by the students of Semester I and II. Various cultural programmes including solo and group song were presented by the first year and second year students of Geology Department. Ms. Gopika Mohan (sem-2 geology student) delivered the Vote of thanks. The programme was concluded by 12.00pm.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION FOR RIVERS 2022: Poster Dispaly

REPORT

The International Day of Action for Rivers was observed by Kristu Jyti College of Management and Technology on March 14th 2022. The programme was organized by Department of Geology. The day is observed to create awareness on importance of rivers and threat to rivers including degradation of river systems. A poster display was presented in the canteen premises as part of observance of the day. 

A malayalam poem recited by Alanjith S. of Semester 6, B.Sc. Geology reflecting the importance of protecting rivers.  An announcement message was passed on conserving the rivers to the students after the thought for the day session by Aparna V. Sabu of Semester 6, B.Sc. Geology. The poster display was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI at 10.45 am at the venue. Students of the Geology Department pinned badges to the teachers of the college as the observance of Action for rivers day. Students from various departments including the faculty members came up to visit the poster display and shared their feedbacks.

National Level Online Quiz on World Rivers Day 2021:

"Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense". The Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology, Chethipuzha, Changanacherry organized a national level online quiz competition on 26th September 2021 for all persons especially students of schools and colleges, to mark the observance of World Rivers Day. A google form has created and circulated among various groups. The link was made to active from 12 noon to 12 midnight, on Sunday 26th of September. E-certificate has awarded to the winners and participants who acquired minimum 80% score.

OBSERVANCE OF EARTH DAY 2022: GEOLOGY EXHIBITION 

REPORT

A Geology Exhibition was conducted by the Department of Geology on 22nd April 2022 as part of observance of Earth Day 2022. The theme of this year’s Earth Day was, Invest in our Planet. The Exhibition was inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI, Principal at 9.30 am. The exhibition was held in Room No. 606. Various kinds of rocks and minerals were exhibited. The students of Geology department explained about each specimen. Students from various departments of the college came to visit the Exhibition and shared their valuable feedbacks.

BSERVANCE OF GEOLOGIST’S DAY 2022

REPORT

The Department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology observed Geologist’s Day on 08 April 2022 at 12pm in Seminar Hall. The event was inaugurated Smt. Ancy Joseph, Director, Department of Ground Water, Government of Kerala. Principal Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI delivered the presidential address. The prayer was led by Alanjith. S of 6th semester. Bodhika Anil of 1st semester welcomed the guests. The Introductory Address was delivered by Dr. Benno Joseph (Head of the Department of Geology). The inauguration was followed by the talk on “Groundwater Scenario in Kerala”. The vote of thanks was delivered by Jobin Jose of 2nd semester, B.Sc. Geology. 

Amalgam – Webinar Series organised by IQAC

Webinar series organised by Department of Geology on 04.10.2021

‘AMALGAM’ was the webinar series organised by Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Kristu Jyoti college of Management and Technology. The series of lecture started from 03/10/2021 and each day was handled by each department.

Department of Geology conducted two sessions of four lectures on 04.10.2021. The first two lectures were organized in the forenoon session and last two in the afternoon session.

The opening talk was on ‘Groundwater Exploration and Utilization’ by Mr. Thomas Scaria (Formerly Senior Hydrogeologist, Department of Groundwater, Government of Kerala), from     9.30 am to 10.45 am. The talk has enabled participants to refresh and reinforce their information on groundwater. The information gathered will definitely help students in their future studies and carrier. ‘Recent Slope Failures in Kerala: A Geomorphological Perspective’ by the resource person Dr. Anish A. U. (Assistant Professor, Department of Geology, Government College, Kottayam) was the second lecture taken in the forenoon session. Dr. Anish, with experience and exposure to landslide related studies gave a new insight to students on key role of geomorphology and its relationship with landslide. 

Afternoon session also had two lectures. First lecture on ‘Environmental Pollution: A Geologist’s view point’ was taken by Mr. Dilipkumar P. G. (Head of the Department of Geology, Government college, Kottayam) from 1.45 pm to 3.00 pm.  This talk has enabled partakers to rejuvenate their information and knowledge regarding the various aspects of environmental pollution. As Environmental Geology is a subject presently dealt with semester V students, the information gathered will definitely help them in their studies and carrier. ‘Gold Exploration – From Target Generation to Resource Estimation’ by Dr. M. K. Devarajan (Head of Exploration, Geovale Services, Kolkata) from 3.30 pm to 4.45 pm was the last talk of the day. Dr. M. K. Devarajan has several years of experience in gold exploration and drilling of base metals, bauxite etc. The lecture has given a new insight to students on gold exploration. 

ONLINE TIER III TRAINING PROGRAMME ON “GROUND WATER CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT”

Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology on behalf of CGWB, Kerala Region, TVM conducted an Online Tier III Training Programme on “Ground Water Conservation and Management” on 29th September 2021. The training programme was organized by Central Ground Water Board, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India for B.Sc. Geology students of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology.

WORLD NATURE CONSERVATION DAY 2021

Nature Conservation Week Celebrations: PRAKRITI 2021

REPORT

The world celebrates The World Nature Conservation Day annually on 28th July to create awareness about the need to preserve the environment and natural resources in order to keep the world habitable and vibrant.  The day was observed by the Geology Department of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology conducting beneficial programmes for four days on 27, 28, 29 and 30th July 2022 named “PRAKRITI 2K21”. To instigate in young pupils the importance of nature conservation for a better tomorrow a virtual awareness class on the topic “Environmental Conservation in Kerala- Changing Perspectives” was organized for the students of Geology department on 27th July at 4 pm via google meet.

As a part of appreciating the concept of Nature Conservation, a videography contest was held on 28th July for the students of the college. Contestants were asked to present a five minutes video of their home-grown kitchen/flower garden. 12 entries were received. Ms. Keziya Ann Thomas of II Semester B.Sc. Psychology won first prize and second prize is secured by Ms. Angel Ann Thomas of II Semester B.A. English. Participation certificate provided to all the contestants.

Various activities were carried on 30th July to practically impose and motivate the student community to indulge more in preserving the boon of mother nature. The day started with ‘Campus Cleaning’ activity at 11.30 am to ensure a plastic free college environment. Rev Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy, CMI inaugurated the day by taking part in the campus cleaning activity along with the students and faculty members of Geology department. The students covered the entire college campus collecting plastic wastes and disposing it promptly. This was followed by a kind gesture of planting saplings at a nearby charity home. Several fruit bearing saplings were planted in the garden of Mercy Home. Rev Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy, CMI planted the first sapling followed by the inhabitants of the charity home. The day ended with a social extension programme by dispensing environment friendly cloth bags to the fruit/vegetable vendors near the college by students of Geology Department.

World Ozone Day 2022: Poster Making Competition

In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16^th September as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. This layer in stratosphere shields the Earth from most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. Depletion of ozone is harmful to living beings. Certain commonly used chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) cause damage to the ozone layer. Watchword for Ozone Day 2022 is ‘Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth’.

The Department of Geology observed Ozone Day to create awareness among students the importance of ozone layer in protecting life. A poster designing completion open to all students of Kristu Jyoti College was conducted on 16.10.2022 as part of the program.  14 students participated in the competition. Posters were evaluated by Mr. Shihabudeen M., member of faculty in Commerce and Mr. Christin Mathew, member of faculty in Management Studies.                                     Dr. Twinkle Jacob and Ms. Sruthi P. Chandran, members of faculty in Geology were Staff Coordinators of the program. Mr. Parthip Suresh and Ms. Laksmi Ajesh, second year B.Sc. Geology students served as Student Coordinators.

World Environment Day 2022

World Environment Day is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. This year it is hosted by Sweden. Only One Earth’ is the campaign for World Environment Day 2022. It calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. The department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology observed World Environment Day on 6^th June 2022. The program was inaugurated by Principal Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI by planting sapling of Mimusops elengi in the college campus by at 11.00am. Principal and Head of the Department Dr. Benno Joseph shared the messege of the day with the students on the occassion. Ms. Anumol C. S. of semester IV Geology recited a Malayalam poem          ‘Oru thai nadam’ by Ms. Sugathakumari, renowned Indian poet and activist. This was followed by a message giving session by Ms. Gopika Mohan of semester IV Geology. At 9.15 am students along with the faculties of the Geology Department visited other Departments and distributed seedlings pinned wishes cards to Principal, Vice-principal, IQAC coordinators, teaching and non-teaching employees of the college.

Independence Day Celebration 2022

 India is celebrating its 75th year of Independence Day as ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ in 2022 to commemorate its freedom. On this day, we Indians celebrate our heroes and freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation to bring us our independence, peace and joy. Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology along with the Department of Geology in association with IQAC celebrated the 75th year of independence on 12th august 2022 with great pride and enthusiasm. The students of Geology Department headed by the staff and student coordinator distributed National Flag to every department as a token of love. National Anthem was sung at 4 p.m. by the students of the department to the whole college through the announcement desk.

NATIONAL POSTAL DAY

In India, National Postal Day is celebrated annually on 10 October, as an extension of World Post Day, which is celebrated on 9^th October. The Day aims to commemorate the role played by the Indian postal department for the past 150 years, which was founded in 1854 by Lord Dalhousie. The Indian postal service is an integral part of India. The postal services in India have given the best performance despite the diversity in culture, tradition, and difficult geographical terrain.

The day was observed by the Geology department and IQAC of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology, by conducting a visit to the nearest post office and honoring the postal staff. Department HOD Dr. Benno Joseph, faculty of Department of Geology, IQAC Coordinator Dr.Susheel George Joseph, and B.Sc. Geology semester 2 students visited Kurisummodu Post Office nearer to the college and conducted a gathering to honor the postal staff. Dr.Benno Joseph presided over the gathering by making awareness about the role of the postal sector in people’s lives, business processes, and the social and economic development of the nation. Dr.Susheel George Joseph, IQAC Coordinator also gave introductory remarks to the gathering. In retort to the gathering, Smt.Bindumol P T, Post Mistress, Kurisummodu Post Office delivered a thorough response to all issues, points, or questions raised. The gathering was winded up by giving a small token to the postal staff from the Geology Department and IQAC of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology.

GENDER EQUITY PROGRAMME

 ‘Gender Equity: Myths and Realities’  

ON 21^st February 2023

The Department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology organized a gender equity programme on ‘Gender Equity: Myths and Realities’ on 21st February 2023. The programme started at 3.00 pm in Room No. 501. Compering was done by Keerthi S Prasad of sem 2 Geology. Abdul Vahab C. S. of sem 2 Geology welcomed the resource person, Dr. Angel Thomas, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Mar Sleeva Medicity, Pala, Kottayam and all other participants. Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department of Geology made the inaugural address. Anu Mathew of semester 6 Geology introduced the resource person to the audience. The session was then handled by Dr. Angel Thomas. She enlightened the audience with the difference between gender equity and equality and came up with measures of being fair to women and men. They should be treated with equity in family as well as public sphere.  After the talk, there was an interactive session with participants. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mariya Joseph of sem 6 Geology.

Geology @ Schools

REPORT

The Department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology organized an extension activity for the 9^th grade students of Kristu Jyoti Higher Secondary School, Chethipuzha on 1^st December 2022. Focusing on the importance of Earth Studies, the faculty members accompanied by the students of third semester took the class on the Geology topics in the Geography syllabus of class 9. The Resource Person were Dr. Benno Joseph (Head of the Department), Dr. Twinkle Jacob (Assistant Professor), Mr. Akash A Nair (Assistant Professor) and Ms. Sruthi P. Chandran (Assistant Professor). The classes were engaged from 9.30 am onwards with the permission of the Principal, Rev. Fr. Tony Elavunkal CMI. After the class, an exhibition of rocks, minerals and fossils were arranged for the students. Economic, Ore and Industrial minerals were exhibited by the students of the department. An interaction session was arranged for the students to clear their doubts regarding the topics taught and the brochure of the college was distributed among them.

 ‘INTRODUCTION TO FIRST AID AND ELEMENTARY MEDICAL CARE’  

ON 10^th February 2023

REPORT-Language Skill Development Programme

A language skill development programme was conducted by Department of Geology on 30^thJanuary 2023 at 3.00 to 4.00 PM in room no: 501for first and second year B.Sc. Geology students. The programme was titled as “THE ESSENTIAL ENGLISH” and focused on communicative English skills. The programme was compered by Jobin Jose of semester IV. The programme started with a silent prayer. Aswathy Ajith said the words of welcome. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department, Geology. Adarsh P introduced the resource person. the language skill development session was taken by Ms. Nisha T, Assistant Professor, Kristu Jyoti College of Management & Technology. The session concluded with word of gratitude by Anjali Vijayan.

National Science Day- Science Quiz Competition

The National Science Day is observed every year on 28^th February to mark the discovery of Raman Effect by Indian scientist C.V. Raman. As part of observing the day Department of Geology organized a General Science Quiz Competition. The competition was conducted in two rounds. First was the preliminary round. It was conducted at 10.00-11.00 AM on 28^th February 2023 in Room No. 504. Twenty teams consisting of 40 students participated in the preliminary round. Twenty-five general science questions were asked to the participants. In the first round Gopika Mohan & Anu Mathew scored the highest marks. Out of 20 teams 4 teams who scored highest marks were selected to the final round.

The final round was conducted at 2.00 - 3.00 PM in Room No. 501 on the same day. Ms. Gopika Sali was the Quiz Master. Ms. Luna Johny dictated the rules of the quiz programme to the participants. The final round had 4 rounds. The first round was ‘General Science Round’. Two set of questions were asked to each team. Second round was ‘Who Am I?’. Five clues of famous scientist were projected to identify the scientists. Third round was a ‘Rapid Fire Round’. Five sets of questions were asked rapidly to each team. The last round was ‘Logo Quiz’. Images of scientifically important places and logos were displayed before the teams. The winners of the competition were Aditya Jagan and Jewel Sony, B.Sc. Geology semester 6. The second prize was bagged by Aadila Subair & Amal Asok Kumar of M.Sc. Psychology, Semester 4. The winners were awarded cash prizes. E- certificates were given to all the participants. The winners of first position were awarded Rs.1000/- and second prize winners were awarded Rs.500/-.

REPORT-ICT Skill Development Programme

The department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology conducted an ICT skill development programme for semester 4 & 6 students of B. Sc. Geology on 25th January 2023 at 3.00 pm in Room no. 501. The class was taken by Mr. Roji Thomas, Head of the Department of Computer Application, Kristu Jyoti College Of Management & Technology. The session started with a silent prayer. Bodhika Anil of semester IV B. Sc Geology welcomed the whole gathering. Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department of Geology delivered the introductory remarks. Dhanush Philip of semester IV introduced the resource person to the participants. The class focused on avoiding the pitfalls of bad PPT slides. The programme was concluded with the vote of Gopika Mohan of semester VI, B. Sc. Geology. Later participants shared their feedbacks.

SOFT SKILL TRAINING PROGRAMME

 ‘Paper Bag Making’

ON 07^th March 2023

The Department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology organized a soft skill training programme on ‘Paper bag making’ on 07^th March 2023. The programme started at 11.00 am in Room No. 502. Compering was done by Teena Aliyas of semester 4 Geology. Bodhika Anil. of semester 4 Geology welcomed the resource person, Mr. Josekutty Joseph, Soft Skill Trainer, Changancherry and all other participants. Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department of Geology made the inaugural address. Dhanush Philip of semester 4 Geology introduced the resource person to the audience. The session was then handled by Mr. Josekutty Joseph. He trained students on making paper bags using chart papers and enlightened students about the importance of learning new skills. After the talk, there was an interactive session with participants. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr Akash A. Nair, Assistant Professor in Geology.

YOGA TRAINING

REPORT

Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI, Principal, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology inaugurated the official programme. He pointed out the importance of Yoga in daily life. Mr. Akash A. Nair, Assistant Professor, and Department of Geology compered the programme. Govind C.A. of Sem II Geology delivered welcome speech. Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the department of Geology gave introductory remarks and explained the significance of yoga in academic life of a student. Jacob Alex of Sem II Geology introduced the resource person Miss Ansu Mary Saji to the audience. The yoga training session followed and students performed various aasanas including suryanamaskaram. Ninu Santa Perumall of Sem II Geology proposed vote of thanks. The programme was cocluded by 12.45 pm.

World Environment Day 2023:  Talk on Only One Earth

World environment day is celebrated every year on 5th June in an effort to increase public awareness of the need to conserve the environment and the planet. On this day, everyone on the earth is reminded to engage in eco-friendly activities. People gather to take pledges in support of creating a more sustainable environment. The Department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology observed World Environment Day on June 5^th 2023 with this objective in mind. Students from the department took part actively to observe the day. A talk by Dr. Jacob George, Vice President, OISCA International Kerala was organized for the students on the topic Only One Earth. The programme began with a silent prayer followed by a welcome speech by Bodhika Anil (Sem 4 Geology). Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI, Principal delivered the presidential addresses and the introductory address was made by Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department. The resource person was introduced by Asri Najeem (Sem 4 Geology). The talk concentrated on the motto of 2023 Environment Day ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. He urged the student community to minimize the use of plastics and to rebuild and protect our nature as plastic wastes are growing in seas and oceans. As a result of which microplastics are getting into our body. The vote of thanks speech was delievered by Lakshmi Ajesh (Sem 4 Geology).

The students participated actively and were impacted by the idea of focusing on recycling of trash and raise awareness among people to reduce plastic waste. Plant more trees and make the Earth a better place to live.

LIFE SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME: YOGA AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING:

CLASS CUM DEMONSTRATION

Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology, Changanacherry in association with IQAC organized a yoga class cum demonstration as part of Life Skill Development Programme on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 2.00 pm onwards at Seminar Hall for Final Year Geology students. Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI, Principal, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology inaugurated the official programme. He pointed out the importance of Yoga in daily life. Ms. Janet Saji of Sem V Geology compered the programme. Anjaly Vijayan of Sem V Geology delivered welcome speech.  Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the department of Geology gave introductory remarks and explained the significance of yoga in academic life of a student. Asri Najeem of Sem V Geology introduced the resource person Miss Ansu Mary Saji to the audience. The yoga training session followed and students performed various aasanas. Amay R. of Sem V Geology proposed vote of thanks. The programme was cocluded by 4.00 pm.

Vayanadhinam- Vayanamatsaram

It is often said that ‘Books are the window to the world’ and people who are constantly reading cannot agree with the adage anymore. Reading not only enhances one's knowledge but helps in improving communication skills and inculcates holistic development. To remind people about the value of reading books even in an era dominated by the internet, National Reading Day is observed on June 19. Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology conducted a live reading completion (Vayanamatsaram) at 2.00 pm in Seminar hall on 19^th June 2023 as part of observance of  National Reading Day 2023. Twelve students from three departments participated in the competition.  Ms. Gopika Sali, Assistant Professor-Chemistry and Ms. Stephaniya John Assistant Professor-Malayalam were the judges in the competition. The contestants were directed to read the article ‘Anarkha Nimisham’ written by Vykkam Muhammad Basheer. The participants were judged on the criteria of voice modulation, pronunciation and overall presentation. Mr. Don Savio Jose, student of 3^rd semester B.Sc. Psychology (2022-25 batch) won first prize and Miss Krishnaprabha A. B., student of 5^th semester B. Sc. Geology (2021-24 batch) won second prize in the competition.

Vayanadinam – Vayanamatsaram is a successful programme conducted by department of Geology. Students from the various departments were actively participated in the competition.  Observance of Reading Day helped to create awareness among participants on importance and benefits of reading. And also get the knowledge about the literary movements in India.

Academic Collaborative Programme

The Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology entered into an academic collaboration with the Department of Geology, Government College Kottayam in the academic year 2022-23. The collaboration was designed to conduct academic programmes beneficial to Geology students. In continuation to this, a Collaborative programme was conducted on 27/06/2023 at 2. 00 pm. As part of the programme Twenty Geology students of 2021 – 24 batch of Kristu Jyoti College visited Geology Museum and Rock Garden at Department of Geology, Government College Kottayam.                           Mr. Dilip Kumar P. G.,  Head of the Department of Geology, Government College Kottayam welcomed the students to the College and took a ten-minute session on scopes of Geology.  Mintu Mathew, Jithin George and Devu S., M. Sc. Final year Geology students of Govt. College Kottayam explained the different types of samples and specimens such as Minerals, Rocks, Fossils, Crystals, Structures and models. After the museum visit next session was Rock Garden visit at the premise of the college. The Rock Garden was a display of large blocks of various types of rocks found in Kerala. Due to heavy rain students were not able to visit the Rock Garden closely. Rajesh K. U., Lab Assistant, Geology Department of Government College Kottayam assisted the students. Mr. Akash A Nair and Ms. Sruthi P Chandran, Assistant Professors in Geology, Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology, accompanied the students in this programme.

International Plastic Bag Free Day – Distribution of paper Carry bags

On July 3, 2023, in honor of International Plastic Bag Free Day, the Department of Geology hosted paper carry bag distribution event at stationary shops of Kurisummodu, Changanacherry to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices. A total of 100 locally sourced paper carry bags were distributed as eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags, with volunteers efficiently managing the distribution process. Simultaneously, an informative awareness campaign was conducted on the detrimental effects of plastic bags. Attendees responded positively, committing to reduce their plastic usage and actively participating in discussions, demonstrating the event's success in raising environmental awareness. In conclusion, the Department of Geology's distribution of paper carry bags on International Plastic Bag Free Day at was a noteworthy effort to advance eco-conscious living. This initiative not only provided practical alternatives to plastic bags but also fostered meaningful dialogue and commitment among attendees to mitigate plastic waste, contributing significantly to our broader environmental preservation goals.

Life Skill Training Programme

Class-cum- demonstration in Vegetable Cultivation

The department of Geology of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology conducted a life skill training programme, class-cum-demonstration in vegetable cultivation in connection with World Nature Conservation Day 2023 for first year students of Geology Department on 27^th July at 11.15 am. The class and demonstration were led by Sri Abhijith S.S Agricultural Officer, Krishi bhavan, Vazhapally, Changanassery. The session started with a silent prayer. Sahlah of Semester 1 welcomed the whole gathering. Dr Benno Joseph, Head of the Department, delivered the introductory address. Principal Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI inaugurated the programme. Mr. Abhijith S.S delivered a class on agricultural techniques and then he demonstrated the preparation of potting mixture and planting. The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks delivered by Bevy Jacob Koshy of Semester 1, the student coordinator of the programme. The participants shared their feedbacks. The programme was a different experience for students. It provided a platform to perform vegetable cultivation. Involvement of students were evident in each step. They collected soil from the college campus. Mixing the soil with organic manure and cocopeat were demonstrated by the Agricultural Officer and each student was made to repeat the same procedure. Students attended the sessions with great enthusiasm and interest. They learnt the process of vegetable cultivation in pots.

International Youth Day 2023

Department of Geology, in association with IQAC observed  International Youth Day 2023 on 12th August 2023.   An essay writing competition (in English and Malayalam) as part of the programme.  The topic given in the competition was

Communicative Skill Programme in Public Speaking Skill

A language skill development session was organized by the department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology. The programme was for the first- and second-year geology students to help with public speaking skills. The class was led by Ms. Binitha Rose Benny, Assistant Professor of English. She engaged the students in various interactive activities. The session began with a silent prayer followed by the welcome speech by Bennat Varghese Roy of 2^nd year geology. The introductory address was delivered by the Head of the department of Geology Dr. Benno Joseph. Gowri G Pillai from 1^st year delivered the vote of thanks.

The Public Speaking Skill programme by Ms. Binitha Rose Benny was interactive and informative for the students. It was a new learning opportunity for the students to build up confidence to speak publicly.

Participation in CYNOSURE 2023-The Edu Science Exhibition organized by Citadel Residential School, Ranni

The Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology participated in CYNOSURE 2023-The Edu Science Exhibition organized by Citadel Residential School, Ranni from 09.11.2023(Thursday) to 10.11.2023(Friday). The theme of the exhibition was ‘Science, Society and environment’. Different varieties of minerals, ore minerals, rocks and fossils were displayed. 13 students of first year B. Sc. Geology (2023 – 26 Batch) along with faculty Mr. Akash.A. Nair displayed and demonstrated specimens. Students and teachers from various schools visited the exhibition. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Jose M.T Retired Scientific Officer /Head Health and Industrial Safety Division of IGCAR, Professor Homi Bhabha National Institute, Mumbai. and Shri. Anto Antony MP, Pathanamthitta Constituency delivered the keynote address. The exhibition was an academically enriching and refreshing experience for visitors, as understood from their feedback. The exhibition lasted for two days and ended by 5pm on 10.11.2023.

Students and teachers collaborated to meticulously curate a diverse range of exhibits, including mineral collections, fossil displays, and interactive demonstrations, all thoughtfully arranged with detailed explanations. The enthusiasm and knowledge displayed by student guides were particularly impressive, showcasing their passion for geology and their ability to engage visitors of all ages. The interactive displays allowed attendees to handle and examine geological specimens, providing a hands-on experience that brought geological science to life. Total number of 34 students participated in the training programme. Language Skill Development Programme was beneficial, enhancing our language proficiency. SOFT SKILL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME- SOAP MAKING

The Department of Geology conducted a Soft Skill Development Programme in Soap Making on 17th October 2023 at 10.00 am. The resource persons for the session were Smt. Alphonsa Varghese and Smt. Graceamma Joseph. The training aimed to impart skills on bar and liquid soap making to students. A participatory approach was used during the training through practical session and lecture. These methods used to enable participants to have fully understanding of skills imparted to them. Also, the trainers insisted on doing business in a professional manner so that their business grow and make good profit. The programme began with an invocation by Keerthana A (1st year Geology). Dr. Benno Joseph (HOD) welcomed the guests and participants which was followed by the inaugural address by Rev. Fr. Joshy Cheeramkuzhy CMI (Principal). The training began with an introduction to soap making by the resource person. All the participants participated enthusiastically in the process. The participants appreciated the resource person for their effort and hard work much needed for maintaining the small-scale business. The session familiarized them with different types of soap, their criteria and their benefits. Students learnt about the ingredients needed to make luxury soaps, skills to make customized soap with minimum equipment and discover the range of oils and colors to be used.The goal to equip students with the necessary skills and tools to enable them to make their own soap products for personal use was fulfilled. The workshop motivated them to set a small-scale business of soap making within their household.

The Department of Geology, IIC, and IQAC of Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology jointly conducted a talk on INNOVATION DEVELOPMENT, on 23rd February 2024 at 2.00 pm in Room No. 501.
Ankitha Krishna B., a second-semester student compered the entire session. The programme started with a silent prayer. Elza Sebastian, a second-semester student welcomed the whole gathering. Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department of Geology delivered an introductory address. Bevy Jacob Koshy, a second-semester student introduced the Resource Person. Mr. Gigi Devasy, HSST in Physics, S.B.H.S.S. delivered a talk on Innovation Development. In his talk, he explained the scope and application of innovation. He also mentioned it is a program as part of the innovation segment that aims to empower future innovators to innovate new products, services, or models to meet emerging requirements, or existing market needs of the society more effectively through specially designed challenges. The formal function ended with a vote of thanks by Bennat Varghese Roy, a fourth-semester student.

NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY 2023 SCIENCE QUIZ COMPETITION

The Department of Geology organized an Interdepartmental Science Quiz Competition in observance of National Science Day on 28 January 2024. The quiz competition had two rounds. First round was a preliminary written test. Second round was an oral and visual round.
Thirty-six participants from all departments participated in the preliminary round of the quiz competition. From these four teams who secured top marks were selected to the finals.
The final round consisted of four rounds. First round was a general Science Quiz Round. Second round was ‘Who am I?’. third round was Rapid fire and fourth round was Picture Quiz. Aivin C. John and Athena Maria Vadakan of B.Sc. Psychology, semester 2 secured the first position. Milan M. Shaji and Aswin P. Shibu of B.Sc. Cyberforensic Sem 2 secured the second position. The winners were awarded cash prizes.

The Department of Geology, Kristu Jyoti College of Management and Technology conducted a Skill Training Programme-Talk on Table Etiquettes on 15th February 2024 at 12.15 pm in Room No. 501. Amith B. Vinayak of Semester 2, B. Sc. Geology compered the entire session. The programme started with a silent prayer. Elza Sebastian of Semester 2, B. Sc. Geology welcomed the whole gathering. Dr. Benno Joseph, Head of the Department of Geology delivered an introductory address. Ms. Luna Johny delivered a talk on table etiquettes.  In her talk, she explained the basic table etiquettes and manners and how to follow it when visiting a restaurant or a meetup.
